Why fentanyl is a different problem than meth

Two things change compared with methamphetamine, and they pull in opposite directions.

The hazard threshold is far lower. Fentanyl is potent in microgram quantities and carfentanil in sub-microgram quantities. The margin for sloppy handling is essentially zero, which is why our technicians work in full respiratory protection with naloxone on site regardless of how minor the job looks on paper.

But it is generally less absorptive. Fentanyl does not volatilize and condense into building materials the way smoked methamphetamine does. Contamination is more often deposited powder and surface residue concentrated in specific areas — where it was handled, used, stored or spilled. In practice that frequently means less demolition and a lower total cost than a comparable meth job.

The regulatory situation, stated plainly

Colorado's 6 CCR 1014-3 sets numeric cleanup standards for methamphetamine. There is no equivalent adopted residential numeric clearance standard for fentanyl in Colorado. Any company implying they can certify a property "fentanyl-clear" to a state standard is describing something that does not exist.

What we do instead: work to established occupational exposure guidance and published decontamination protocols, sample where sampling is meaningful, document every step, and give you a clear written record of scope and methods. If a property has both meth and fentanyl involvement — which is increasingly common — the meth clearance standard governs, and we certify to it.

Straight answer on testing

Fentanyl surface testing exists and we can arrange it, but interpret results carefully: without an adopted clearance standard, a number tells you contamination is present, not whether the property is legally "clean." For most residential fentanyl calls, the right move is thorough documented decontamination rather than chasing a threshold that hasn't been set.

Pricing

Fentanyl decon is priced on the same rate card as meth remediation — see pricing. Because it typically involves less structural removal, most residential fentanyl jobs land at the lower end of each band. Vehicle decontamination starts at $500. A small apartment unit commonly runs $2,450–$5,750.

FAQ

Fentanyl Decontamination questions

Can I just clean it myself?

Not to a standard anyone will accept. Methamphetamine residue is not a surface film — it absorbs into drywall, carpet pad, insulation and duct lining, and it migrates through the HVAC system. Household cleaners redistribute it. Painting over it traps it temporarily and it re-emerges.

More importantly, self-cleaning produces no certification. No lender, no buyer, no county health department and no tenant will accept "I scrubbed it." If the property is going to be sold, rented or occupied by your family, it needs documented clearance.

How do your prices compare to other Colorado contractors?

We beat competitor bids daily. Send us any quote you have already received and we will read it line by line, tell you honestly whether the scope is fair, and show you where we come out. A lot of the bids we review are padded — and a few are genuinely underscoped, skipping HVAC or clearance testing so the headline number looks lower than the job actually is. We will point that out either way.

What we will not do is quote you a number over the phone and then change it later. See the next question.

How long does remediation take?

A typical single-family decontamination takes 2 to 5 working days on site, plus 2–4 business days for clearance lab results. Light contamination in a small apartment can be done in a single day. Full former-lab remediation with structural removal can run 1–3 weeks.

If you have a closing date, tell us the date. Our 48-hour rush scheduling exists specifically to save transactions.

What is the legal cleanup standard in Colorado?

Colorado regulation 6 CCR 1014-3 sets the residential methamphetamine cleanup standard at 0.5 µg per 100 cm² of surface area. Limited-exposure areas such as attics and crawlspaces are allowed up to 4 µg/100 cm², and painted-over surfaces up to 1.5 µg/100 cm². Properties where the P2P manufacturing method was used also carry lead, mercury and iodine thresholds.

A property is not legally "clean" because it looks clean. It is clean when a certified consultant's post-decon samples come back under standard and the certification paperwork is issued.
